PRODUCTS Our mill is located in an excellent Appalachian timber basin with species composition of yellow poplar, red oak, white oak, white ash with lesser volumes of cherry, walnut, basswood and hard maple. Poplar - Shenandoah Hardwood’s signature species. Our poplar (Lirodendron tulipirfera) is a favorite in the export market due to its predominance of light, creamy color and with light lime green colored heartwood that is utilized in natural finishes. Approximately 60% of our annual production is poplar. We cut 4/4 – 12/4 although we restrict the 10/4 & 12/4 to the cooler months to reduce the possibility of staining during the drying process. We produce a limited volume Export Grade of 4/4 & 5/4 FAS/1F poplar that is color selected, selected for heavy sapwood and light green heartwood. Our Domestic Grade poplar does not have color restrictions and will have a wider width average than our Export Grade. We will occasionally offer a Paint Grade poplar that allows sap stain Red Oak – the predominate red oak in our procurement range is Northern Red Oak (Quercus.rubra). In contrast with coastal & piedmont grown red oak, the local red oak has a softer texture and a more uniform light pink color when dried. Mineral streaks are minimal. White Oak – the majority of the local species of white oak is the true White Oak (Quercus alba) with a smaller percentage of Chestnut oak (Quercus prinus). Due to the limited supply of white oak in our area, we only offer 4/4 white oak as a kiln dried product. We offer a special grade of white oak marketed as Rustic White Oak with small, frequent sound defects that is highly demanded in flooring and paneling applications in the US and global marketplace. We offer 4/4 & 5/4 poplar and 4/4 red oak as 1 Common shorts – 4, 5 & 6’ lengths that offer high yields in applications that can utilize shorter lengths. Shenandoah Hardwoods can offer-off site surfacing and straight line ripping. Dependent upon current timber availability, Shenandoah Hardwood Lumber will occasionally cut hard maple, soft maple, walnut, cherry & basswood.
